A plinth for a rare 15th Century carving of King Jesse along with an altar for a chapel at St. Mary’s in Abergavenny, Wales.
The impressive wooden sculpture once held a whole sculpted tree telling the lineage of Jesus. Nowadays only the lower part the reclined King Jesse remains. This tree has been beautifully recreated in the stained glass window by Stained Glass artist Helen Wittaker.
The design is inspired by the geometric proportioning system that can be found in the stained glass window right above the plinth – in that way, they form one unit. The inner framework of the plinth is made from pine to support the 400kg sculpture. The outer construction is made from oak with stripes of dark red marble inlay along the horizontal edges. The marble was chosen to correspond to the exquisite 15th century tombs which can be found in the church. All the stone inlay work was executed by Aline Marion.
